GLASGOW have kept the pressure on Premier League leaders Somerset after a convincing 59-31 win over Workington today.
The Tigers looked set at one stage to hit the high 60s against a lacklustre Comets team as Aaron Summers, Richard Lawson, Richie Worrall and Nike Lunna all completed their first three races unbeaten by an opponent.
In the end the visitors managed to restore some pride with 5-1 in heat 13, but that was not nearly enough to test the Tigers’ unbeaten run at Ashfield.
It put Glasgow to within a point of Somerset but the Rebels are in action tonight (Sunday) away at Scunthorpe and will have three further meetings in hand.
Closest challengers Peterborough suffered a shock home defeat to Edinburgh today, putting the Monarchs into third and just three behind their Scottish rivals with a meeting extra to complete.
Top scorer Richard Lawson says the team are hitting form at the right time as they look towards the play-offs, which will ultimately decide the destination of the championship.
Lawson – whose only dropped points came in that heat 13 – said: “Everyone expected it to be a lot more difficult than it was. We dominated from start to finish.
“I was a bit gutted about losing the maximum but 13 points is not a bad return, so I can’t complain too much.
“Everyone is riding well right through the team. We just need to keep it going.
“It is a great time to come good. We didn’t have a home meeting for three weeks at one point and that affected us a bit – and then we bounced back with that win at Berwick – and it’s been good since then.
“If we can just keep doing what we’re doing, we should be fine.”
There could have been maximums scored by any one of six riders in the Tigers side with Lawson, Summers, Lunna, Rene Bach and Coty Garcia all dropping points in just one heat each, while Worrall looked set for a full-house before an engine failure in heat 12. It was a similar fate in heat 14 that ended Lunna’s chances of a second home maximum of the season.
Reserve guest Luke Chessell had some bad luck of his own when he fell in heat two and then his own machine let him down in heat four while he was holding off the Workington pair in second place.
The Tigers now look favourites to finish second, which would see them with one less meeting in the play-offs.
They have a big weekend ahead with away meetings at Plymouth and Rye House before facing Ipswich – featuring British Champion Danny King and ex-Glasgow man Ben Barker – in their ranks.
Tigers scorers: Richard Lawson 13, Nike Lunna 10+2, Richie Worrall 10, Coty Garcia 8+3, Rene Bach 8+2, Aaron Summers 8+1, Luke Chessell (guest) 2.
