GLASGOW’S chances of catching Leicester at the top of the Championship suffered a blow tonight when they were well beaten at home to Scunthorpe.
The Tigers won just a third of the races, with only Craig Cook – who was beaten once – and Claus Vissing, who took victory in heat 12, taking heat wins for the home team.
One positive was the improvement as the meeting went on of new boy Sam Jensen, who beat Ben Barker in heat 15 to post a score of 5+2.
Boss Cami Brown said track conditions did not favour his side but insists they are still well in the hunt for the league title.
He said: “I can’t hide my personal disappointment, as that’s the first time I’ve lost in the league as manager.
“We rolled the dice with the track, which has been under water the past two days with the horrendous rain. That was no excuse – Scunthorpe rode what was in front of them and did it better than us – but I feel we would have beaten them on a normal night.
“A couple of our guys were well below par and we might not finish top now, but there is still everything to race for.”
Brown added: “As the meeting wore on and the track settled a little, Sam Jensen showed the talent he has.
“Paul (Starke) has been given the assurance he will get his place back, but Sam will be an asset and even if he is only here briefly this year, that’s not to say he won’t be in our plans for next year. He is a talented boy and on a very good average.
“Not only is he a good rider, he’s a really nice lad to deal with. He’s also very young at 22 and has a big future ahead of him.”
Glasgow now host Berwick next Friday before travelling to face the Bandits away the following night, as they look to start hunting down the Lions.
