With the new speedway season now just eight short weeks away, the highly exciting momentum which surrounds the new era at Glasgow Speedway continues unabated as the club continues to deliver both on and off track.
With significant redevelopment work now in full swing at the club’s Ashfield Stadium base, the Tigers have also been turning attention to ensuring they will be equally as impressive on track in 2015 as we chase down Premier League glory.
Hot on the heels of last week’s announcement of the full time signing of Australian Aaron Summers, the Tigers management have quickly followed up to sensationally claim another club asset, for an undisclosed fee, in the form of new No.1 rider RICHARD LAWSON who also now joins the Glasgow club on a full transfer from parent club Workington.
Richard, who is at last set to pull on the No.1 Glasgow race jacket in 2015 having been chased by the club previously, had no hesitation in agreeing to the initial suggestion about fully committing to the Tigers:
“I was very open to the suggestion of being transferred to Glasgow and being a full part of what is being planned there. I’ve not ridden for Workington in a number of seasons now, and it will be nice to race again for the my parent club.”
“As the season gets ever closer, I’m feeling more and more excited about the challenges ahead and helping to repay the faith Glasgow have placed in me.”
Reflecting on the club’s latest acquisition and the benefits to the team, Glasgow co-promoter Alan Dick expressed his pleasure:
“We are thrilled to confirm that Richard is now a fully-fledged Tiger. He’s a popular rider with Glasgow fans despite never having ridden for us and he will certainly provide us with that ability to win heats home and away which every club requires from its No.1 rider.”
“In speaking with Workington it became evident that Richard was for sale, and we quickly decided that there were only benefits from striking a deal to purchase him on a full time basis. We know that Richard will also race for Elite side Lakeside, however, now as his parent club, our league and cup fixtures will take precedence should there arise any fixture clashes.”
“With everything which is going on around the club being so very positive this latest signing is yet another boost to our supporters and just the latest reason to feel very excited about the future”
The capture of Lawson as a full-time Tiger, with the associated benefit of ensuring that the rider will fulfil all official fixtures, will allay any fears amongst the club’s supporters’ that the rider may not be available for various key meeting’s in the season ahead.
Glasgow fans’ will have their first opportunity to meet new club owners Michael & Gerry Facenna, and catch-up with all the very latest stadium and team news as preparation for the new season gathers increasing momentum, at a supporters event to be staged at Ibrox Stadium on Saturday 28th February (7pm) – more details to be released soon.
As confirmed recently the club are now working in conjunction with the Department for UK Visa & Immigration to secure the necessary licensing required to allow winter signing Kozza Smith to link-up with the Tigers in time for the new season. The necessary process has been initiated and we expect to be able to update supporters at the above event.
