It was a mixed night for the Glasgow duo at the Premier League Pairs in Somerset tonight – as they just missed out on a semi-final place.
Nick Morris was arguably the best rider on show from all 10 teams in the group heats, scoring 15 from a possible 16 points and fighting from behind on more than one occasion.
However, Richard Lawson had a tougher time – failing to score in his first three races before a second place worth three points in his last heat. The 29-year-old seemed to struggle out the gates early on and appeared low on power.
It was in heat 20 that he came good – the last of the group races – when joining Morris for a superb 7-2, and although that drew them level with Redcar on 18 points and joint-second in their section, the Bears qualified for the semis having beaten the Tigers head-to-head earlier in the evening.
Ipswich went on to win in the final against the hosts after the home team’s Brady Kurtz took a heavy fall on the first bend and was disqualified.
Elsewhere in the meeting, ex-Tiger Kevin Doolan scored 10 for Berwick and 2014 Glasgow rider Kevin Wolbert scored two for Edinburgh, who ended their night on 16 points.
Josh Grajczonek, who began his career at Ashfield, races to eight in the qualifying heats for Somerset and another third place in the semi-final took him and Kurtz to the showdown with Ipswich’s Danny King and Rohan Tungate, before his hopes of victory were ended on the first lap.
There is no meeting at Ashfield this Sunday due to the British Grand Prix at Cardiff, and there is also no match on Tuesday despite what was previously listed.
