RICHIE Worrall has backed Glasgow team boss Stewart Dickson to build another competitive side as he looks forward to returning to the club in 2017.
The Englishman has been reunited with fellow 2016 KO Cup winners Aaron Summers and Richard Lawson at the top end of the Tigers’ team as they look to challenge for the SGB Championship title.
It means that Dickson has used up around 25 points of his 40-point limit, with four riders still to sign.
But Worrall isn’t concerned about claims that the side will be top-heavy, and believes other clubs would love to have such a strong heatleader trio on board.
He said: “Stewart knows what he’s doing.
“I saw Berwick’s team the other day and I was impressed – they look like they’ve got strength throughout. But they haven’t got me, Aaron and Richard.
“The guys who are signed so far all know the quick way around Glasgow and we’re good with youngsters – I’m willing to help anyone, as are Aaron and Richard.
“I think it’s going to be a three-way battle between us all year for No 1 – which is good for the team – and we have three guys who are more than capable of being the No 1.
“Barring us three, the rest of the riders will probably be young lads who need helping, and we’re more than capable of passing on some knowledge onto the guys who are coming in.
“Everything is going to help going into next year with Glasgow. I’m comfortable there, I know everybody. I enjoyed every minute of it this year and it was a great season, so not too much is changing and hopefully we can better ourselves.”
Worrall is already preparing for next season with the construction of a new workshop in a garage provided by sponsor Mark Hennessy, then plans to start training in December.
He’s also still hoping to secure more rides next season by doubling-up again in the top-flight SGB Premiership, which he says would help his performances for Glasgow.
He said: “Riding in two leagues gives you confidence, it’s good for keeping sharp because you’re on the bike, and financially it’s a lot better – it makes the job worthwhile.
“If you’re going to do speedway, to compete with the quick lads, you’ve got to make it the only thing that you do. There’s no time for work because you’ve got to be training and preparing the bikes, practising when you can, and all the hours you spend driving up and down the motorway.
“Just doing the one league, to benefit and make money from it is a bit difficult, so you need the two leagues – or even the one here and ride abroad – but that’s not what I’m looking at just now.”
Worrall is one of the guests at Ibrox Stadium this Friday (7.30pm) as Glasgow Tigers Supporters’ Group holds its winter event, which will also feature team news and other guests including Simon Stead.
