DOTING Danny Ayres says he defied doctors’ orders to get back on a bike for Glasgow because he’s in love with the Tigers.
Ayres, who turns 30 today, made his comeback on Sunday despite breaking his wrist just two-and-a-half weeks earlier, scoring three.
Now he’s revving himself up for what’s potentially the biggest match of his career so far – a top-of-the-table showdown with joint Premier League leaders Somerset.
He said: “Say we make it to the end and go all the way – I want to be involved in the whole year so that I can stand and legitimately say that I helped this team.
“Every one of these riders helps this team, and I want to be a part of it. I love every one of them, I love the fans, I love the club – I’m in love with the place and I don’t want it to stop.
“The wrist is all good. I wasn’t meant to be back for six weeks so it’s the only time I’ve been pleased with just getting a few points.
“I was here to help the team and that’s all I ever want to do. I’m passionate – I just love this club, I love speedway, and I want to give back.
“It’s difficult to come back and start trying to do new things with the broken wrist. It’s just a slow process but I’ll take it race by race and try to enjoy it.”
Nike Lunna may have given fans a hair-raising experience with his brilliant pass in heat 14 against Ipswich – but Ayres barely had any left after his break.
He revealed: “For the comeback, I said to the missus, can you do a mad hair style? So she cut my hair but messed my beard up, so I’ve ended up with a moustache!
“But I like making people laugh and I’ve had a laugh with it. It’s good fun.”
Somerset have three meetings before Sunday’s fixture, meaning they could arrive as outright leaders. Tapes-up is at 3pm.
