JACK Smith is bidding to take his first race win in Glasgow colours tomorrow – and follow his predecessor into Tigers folklore.
The Tigers take on Peterborough aiming to make it four points from two matches this week, with the likes of World U21 star Jack Holder bidding to stop them in their tracks.
Smith, 18, has scored a few vital points for the club of late as he gets to grips with life in the SGB Championship.
But he’s desperate to emulate the success of last year’s No 7 Danny Ayres, who made a name for himself at Glasgow last season after bagging his first heat two reserves’ race win.
He said: “I’m an asset at Glasgow and if they’re looking to keep me in the team for many years, I’m sure it’ll benefit me and Glasgow to build on my experience.
“In years to come, I should be in the main body of the team scoring heaps of points. It just all comes down to experience and getting laps in.
“Once I get the heat two win in this league I’m sure it will boost my confidence to go and win other heats, and carry on winning heat twos.
“When Danny Ayres won his first heat two around Glasgow, he was winning nearly every heat two. It would take the pressure off if I could do it.”
Smith, who races in two other leagues in Britain, will also face the likes of Ulrich Ostergaard and Paul Starke tomorrow – whose past performances at Ashfield suggest they won’t give Glasgow an easy time of it.
“It’s the start of my second season and I haven’t been going as long as any of these guys, but I’m in the same league as them, and I’m getting on the pace with them,” Smith added.
“If you give me another few years’ experience, by then I should be doing what they’re doing.
“To be riding with them at the age I am at is good. I’m not wanting to put too much pressure on myself – I’m just wanting to go out there and get better every time.”
Peterborough are back at full strength for the tie – with Aaron Summers lining up at No 5 for the home team and Richard Lawson switching to 3.
