STEWART Dickson hailed one of the best heats ever seen at Ashfield as Glasgow beat Workington by the narrowest of margins.
The Tigers took a 46-44 win against the Comets in a closely-fought SGB Championship tie.
Workington took a two-point lead twice before heat nine, when Richard Lawson and Nike Lunna levelled things up.
Lawson landed the crucial blow in heat 12 as he and Tom Perry bagged a 4-2 which put the home team two in front.
Captain Aaron Summers then had a battle royal with away No 1 Craig Cook in heat 13 as the pair exchanged the lead over four scintillating laps.
And Summers joined Richie Worrall for a 3-3 in the final heat to ensure the three points stayed with Glasgow – though Workington took a consolation point for their efforts.
The Tigers team boss was happy with the outcome despite almost slipping up at home for the first time this season.
He said: “We had a couple of riders off-form today for one reason or another and Workington rode pretty well.
“But we got the win, even though it was a bit too close for comfort. We got the three points – obviously Workington got one which we don’t like, but they certainly deserved it. They were good.
“We weren’t quite ourselves and it was difficult to put our finger on it exactly. It was a strange sort of meeting – we just didn’t ride the way we thought we would.
“We weren’t gating for a start – or they were gating – and they’ve obviously learned from experience because their riders were all riding middle to outside of the track, or round the fence, and we were following them, even though most of the dirt was put down on the inside to start with.
“A special mention for heat 13 – one of the best races probably ever seen at Ashfield – with Aaron Summers and Craig Cook. They were both hard but fair – but it was a tough, tough race. It was the highlight of the meeting.
“And we got the three points in heat 15 which we needed to get us over the line.
“It wasn’t a classic, but we won, and I’m thankful for that. We didn’t race great, they rode pretty well, and we still won.
“We maybe played our get out of jail card today, which is a bit too early in the season.”
Glasgow’s next fixture is on Saturday at 7pm when they face Edinburgh at the Peugeot Ashfield Stadium.
