GLASGOW were back with a bang today – as they hammered Workington to give themselves one foot in the League Cup final.
Three Tigers – Aaron Summers, Rene Bach and Richie Worrall – were unbeaten by an opponent as the Comets struggled to land a blow.
Despite tricky conditions due to persistent drizzle, Summers and Bach raised the roof with two brilliant passes in heats 13 and 15 to seal a 64-25 win.
The Tigers will defend their lead in the second leg next Saturday.
Dane Bach said: “Things are getting better and I’m making a few starts, which makes it a lot easier.
“I’m happy with today’s result. We still have a tough meeting at Workington as they have a bit to prove now, but at least the job is half-done and hopefully we can go and finish it off early.
“Today wasn’t ideal for everyone. I didn’t make a good start in heat 15 but Workington’s Ricky Wells ripped his goggles off and once he did that I knew he was going to struggle the rest of the race. Fair play to him for keeping going, though.”
Bach was described last week by boss Stewart Dickson as being like the rider that was tipped for huge things at Newcastle a few seasons ago.
And the 26-year-old says he’s hitting some of the best form he’s had for years.
He said: “That is a big compliment. Since I had a big injury at Newcastle I haven’t really found form over here but things are working out and I’m enjoying it at the minute, that makes it so much easier. It’s a great club and a good team, so we need to stay clear of injuries now and keep going.”
The tie was effectively over by heat 10 when a track inspection was called due to the wet weather.
However, both sides agreed to continue but the gap only got bigger.
Wells was the victim both times as first Summers in heat 13 powered past him to keep his maximum going, while Bach lined the American up for two laps before getting the better of him in the final race.
As well as facing Workington on Saturday, Glasgow are in KO Cup action at Somerset on Friday and at home to the Rebels next Sunday.
