GLASGOW have taken a big step towards the KO Cup final after a convincing derby win over Edinburgh gave them a 16-point lead at the halfway stage.
The Tigers had moved 12 ahead by heat six at Ashfield, and it was not until a dozen heats in that the visiting Monarchs were able to offer something in response.
There was a scare for Cami Brown’s men as Broc Nicol flew over the handlebars in heat eight but, after being checked by the paramedics, he was able to continue the meeting.
The home side finished with a 5-1 and a 4-2 to put further distance between the teams ahead of the second leg at Armadale.
Tom Brennan, who had his best night so far in Tigers colours with 11 points, said: “A lot of hard work has gone into that tonight and it’s definitely been a long time coming for me.
“Being at the bottom end of the team it’s great to have that tonight, it’s a fantastic feeling for me.
“Every team has their ups and downs, every team can have a really good meeting and then will probably have a poor meeting, that’s the way speedway works. But I think you can now see the momentum building and that should take us all the way to the final.
“I definitely wouldn’t call myself a hero but it’s a great feeling to be here tonight and great to have that result.”
Glasgow now await the outcome of the final Championship play-off quarter-final match on Tuesday night between Edinburgh and Redcar to find out who they will face in that competition – with Poole already having picked the winners of Leicester versus Scunthorpe.
