Tigers and Monarchs fans showed their compassion by donating £2,300 to help Darcy Ward at the Glasgow leg of the Premier League Cup Final. Glasgow owners Michael and Gerry Facenna added £1,000 of their own money to take the total to £3,300.
The rising Swindon and Australia track star suffered a serious injury during a race in Poland in August and is currently receiving state of the art treatment at the specialist hospital in England. His father, George, showed tremendous courage in travelling to Glasgow and going onto centre green during the meeting to thank fans personally for their generosity.
The fundraising effort in Glasgow was kicked off the previous week by Tigers starter Heather McNeilly. Heather began by selling stickers in aid of Darcy and personally raised over six hundred pounds toward the Australian superstar’s medical care.
Gerry Facenna commented: “Like everyone else connected with speedway Michael and I were deeply shaken when we heard news of Darcy’s devastating accident.
“It was great that Heather came up with the idea of a fundraising effort here in Glasgow and that fans from both teams were quick to contribute to Darcy’s specialist care. I’m sure other speedway clubs will be seeking opportunities to organise similar fundraising efforts.”
Michael Facenna added: “It was good to be able to meet George Ward and convey our sincere wishes for the best possible recovery for his brave son.
“I’m sure I speak for the speedway community as a whole when I say our thoughts will remain with Darcy and his family.”
