TEAM boss Cami Brown admitted his side needed to “dig deep” to beat Workington.
The Allied Vehicles Tigers defeated the Comets by 48-42 in a tough encounter at Ashfield on Friday night.
Brown’s side endured a lot of bad luck with two engine failures and lost Freddy Hodder with a knuckle injury after a nasty Heat 4 crash.
In the end it need a last heat decider 5-1 from Leon Flint and Kyle Howarth to secure the Cab Direct Championship points.
He said: “We really had to dig deep for that one. Workington have a team that love Ashfield and they were excellent throughout the meeting.
“A great deal of things went against us. Leon had a bike issue in Heat 3 and Mario Hausl’s bike gave up when challenging for the lead in Heat 8. It was also a blow to lose Freddy in Heat 4.
“So it was a struggle to get the job done. Kyle and Leon were excellent all night. Everyone else chipped in and that was just enough to get the victory.
“We have a fair track and fantastic racing and entertainment at our stadium, it’s one of the best tracks in Europe.
“But that also means there’s no fear factor from opposition teams. They can’t wait to enjoy themselves.
“However it’s up to our boys to be that bit better. There are many signs of improvement but we are throwing away too many points. That needs to change.”
It was close throughout but a vital 5-1 in Heat 9 from Flint and Kevin Juhl Pedersen gave the home side some breathing space of a six-point lead.
Craig Cook and tactical substitute Jonas Jeppesen narrowed the gap in Heat 12. A 4-2 from Tate Zischke and Max Perry over Juhl Pedersen in Heat 14, meant Tigers led by just 43-41 going into the final heat.
But a blistering start from Flint and Howarth sealed the points.
