RICKY Wells has called for one final push from Glasgow as they bid to lift their first SGB Championship title in a decade.
The Tigers host the first leg of the play-off final against Poole on Tuesday, in the first-ever staging of November racing at the Peugeot Ashfield Stadium.
The season has been extended to allow the title decider to be completed after heavy rain put paid to efforts to run the meetings last week, with the second leg in Dorset on Thursday.
The Tigers skipper said: “Poole are a tough team but I believe Glasgow are also a strong team.
“I think the key to beating Poole will be a strong home leg. I don’t want to put a number on it, but everyone knows they need to be at their best.
“But this is speedway, anything can happen and it’s really up to us as riders at the end of the day.
“If we can have a solid showing at reserve, and restrain some of the heat leaders at home, I think we have more than a chance.
“It feels great to be leading the team into the final – it was the goal for us.
“I feel like in years past, when I have been captain, I have not done a great job with getting behind the boys – but this year I see the passion from the fans and the hard work from the management, so it’s the least I can do.”
Wells delivered his best performance of the season to knock Edinburgh out in the semi-finals – and admits it was all the sweeter to get one over Glasgow’s big rivals.
He said: “It’s always good to go to Edinburgh and put in a good showing.
“After the KO Cup shock departure it kind of gave the team a wake up call, especially me. I have done enough laps around Edinburgh to be able to go there and get a double-figure score.
“It means a lot to have a good result right before the final, but I think it means even more to knock Edinburgh out of the play-offs.
“Glasgow deserve to be in the final for another year, we have been a strong, solid team throughout the season. Now we just need all the boys to pull together for one last time.”
Tickets for Tuesday’s meeting are available online or can be bought on the door, with tapes going up at 7.30pm.
