Glasgow Speedway are disappointed to announce our planned Farewell Meeting for club stalwart James Grieves, scheduled for this Sunday, 27th October has been postponed.
The event, which would have brought the curtain down on the 2013 season, was designed around a rider field largely hand-picked by James himself to contain many of his friends in speedway, each of whom were keen to support the meeting as tribute to James and his distinguished speedway career.
Unfortunately the meeting would have fallen between both legs of the Premier League Play-Off Final between Edinburgh & Somerset (1st leg on Friday 25th, with 2nd leg on Monday 28th October) and was due to have featured 5 of the riders who are chasing league championship glory.
Speaking about having had to come to a difficult decision James Grieves remained upbeat:
“I’m obviously disappointed not to be able to stage this meeting as it would have been a nice way this season to round off my career with Glasgow.
With Edinburgh and Somerset set to contest the league title next weekend of course this has to take precedence, their meetings will be the biggest of the whole season and the riders must focus fully on those.
A lot of hard work has gone into making arrangements for my farewell, and I’d personally like to thank Joe Scott as well as everyone who had pledged sponsorship.
What I didn’t want is to have to reshape the rider field at the last minute, it isn’t easy at this time of the season with riders having packed up, and I wanted to make sure it was as competitive and attractive as possible.
I’ve spoken to the Glasgow management about staging a meeting to kick off next season, and this is something we will aim to do.”
This cancellation now means the official end of season 2013 for all at Glasgow.
