Workington’s Nicki Barrett took the inaugural Peugeot Open today at Ashfield. He blasted around the fast starting Dimitri Berge on the opening bends of the final and managed to hold him off over the 4 laps to take the title. Berge had only dropped a point to Alex Davies in the qualifying heats and he and Barrett both went straight through to the final. The other two spots were taken by Davies and Alex Edberg who both held off Bradley Wilson-Dean in the semi final.
Glasgow’s James Sarjeant had started the meeting as one of the favourites and won the opening heat but a missed gate in his second ride found him at the back as they entered the first bend and he ran into Henyk Stichauer who had done a 180 in front of him. He walked into the ambulance but took no further part in the meeting.
The meeting was not surprisingly dominated by the PL riders, although Wilson-Dean and Danny Phillips were competitive without really looking like beating their higher league opponents.
It was also nice to see two young Scotsman take part in the meeting with both Ryan MacDonald and Melrose born Luke Ruddick scoring a couple of points.
