Workington duly wrapped up the necessary win to qualify for the semi-finals although they had to win a last heat decider to do so.
Anders Thomsen declared himself fit, with R/R still in operation for Dimitri Berge, Comets were at full strength.
Tigers made a good start with Kevin Wolbert just heading Josh Grajczonek in heat one, with another former Tiger Mason Campton third.
Comets were on a 5-1 in heat 2 until Kasper Lyyke passed Ashley Morris at the end of the opening lap, Morris then falling on the first bend. The referee was possibly a bit hasty with the stop lights and the inevitable happened in the re-run with Chris Mills touching the tapes. Tigers took an easy 5-1.
Theo Pijper easily won heat 3 but the heat was shared.
Workington took their first heat win in heat 4 with Rene Bach passing Thomsen on the back straight and Mills third over a hard chasing Rusty Harrison.
The scores were back level again in heat 5 but only after Mark Lemon passed Campton on the second lap.
Workington then took a shock 5-1 in heat 6 with Mills being team rode by Bach. Wolbert took up chase but was passed by Lyyke at the end of the third lap. Lyyke looked as if he may have caused problems for the Comets due had he taken third earlier.
The Comets by now were in control and another good gate saw them on another 5-1 but Harrison chased and eventually passed Ricky Wells on the third lap to limit the Comets to a 6 point lead.
They looked like they were going to extend this in heat 8 when again they were first out of the start only for Lemon to pass Mills, only for the Comet to return the favour on the next bend. On the back straight of the third lap Mills raised his hand to signal a problem, causing the Tigers to shut off slightly only for him to get the bike going again. He eventually packed up on the last lap.
There was a bit of controversy in heat 9 when the blue light went on after the tapes had been touched despite Bach being the obvious culprit. The correct exclusion light went on shortly after!! Tigers took the expected 5-1 but only after Bach had closed right up on Pijper.
Ricky Wells took heat 10 but only just with both Wolbert and Thomsen close behind.
It looked like Glasgow would put another dent in Workington’s chances when they held a 4-2 coming out of bend 2 only for Campton to pass Harrison as Grajczonek passed Lyyke. Rusty then gave chase and looked like he was through on the inside on the third bend in the third lap only for Campton to close the door, which allowed Grajczonek to nip through in the inside when Rusty went wide.
Tigers looked like they would immediately strike back when Thomsen and Lemon gated but when Lemon lifted on the fourth bend it allowed Wells through. Mark doing a brilliant job to avoid Wells’ back wheel and the fence, when he regained control.
Heat 13 looked like it would decide the meeting and with an easy 5-1 for Bach and Grajczonek, Comets looked home and dry.
Back came Glasgow though with Theo winning from the tapes, with Kasper seemingly comfortable in second until he hit a bump out wide on the third lap allowing Howarth to close. Unfortunately he again went too wide on the last bend allowing Howarth to pass him on the inside and win the meeting for Workington.
Comets needed a heat advantage to qualify and it was never in any doubt with Bach and Grajczonek easily winning heat 15 for a 5-1 and a 50-40 win.
Workington never really looked like losing and it was always about by how much they would win by. A couple of tapes infringements made their task harder along with their reserves struggling. Glasgow have looked better of late but today was a set back with their gating prowess going missing again and the track not having enough grip to pass. Both Harrison and Wolbert looked quick but just couldn’t get past their opponent.
R/R again was a poor substitute and with Thomsen being used sparingly due to his injury,
Tigers needed some form from the others which didn’t always materialize.
Glasgow will need to get their gating boots on; along with a grippier track in order to counter Edinburgh next week or it could be another dispiriting afternoon.
