Glasgow took another 3 league points in their quest for a play-off spot, as a surprisingly poor Workington side offered little resistance and were fortunate to reach 30 points.
With high winds battering Glasgow, it felt more like October than early August but it didn’t seem to slow the home riders down as they shot into a 16-8 lead, with only Luke Chessell failing to beat an opponent, although he lead Claus Vissing in heat 4 until a mistake on the last bend of the third lap, let the Dane through.
Richie Worrall just held off Ricky Wells in heat 5 but the pattern of 5-1s continued in the next two, with Nike Lunna brilliantly going from last to second in heat 7, rounding Rasmus Jensen on the second bend of the last lap after chasing him down.
Comets finally got a heat win in heat 8 with ex Tiger Mason Campton making the start but they could only share the heat.
Glasgow then won the match with another three 5-1s, Lunna passing Wells in heat 11 to thwart the double points.
By this stage the score stood at 48-18 but Workington staged a fight back of sorts, helped by a couple of home engine failures. Heat 12 was shared, with Worrall failing to leave the line and then surprisingly Vissing and Wells took a 5-1 over the previously unbeaten Richard Lawson and Aaron Summers. Bach won heat 14 but Lunna’s maximum went when he stopped at the back just as he was about to pass Matt Williamson.
It looked like the Comets would finish with another 5-1 in heat 15 when Wells and Vissing led down the back straight but Lawson powered underneath both Comets coming off the fourth bend to go from third to first and then Worrall chased Wells and pipped him on the line in a thrilling finish.
It certainly wasn’t as entertaining as the previous weeks’ match against Edinburgh but again Nike Lunna provided most of the excitement in another man of the match performance. Strangely none of the home men scored a maximum but the heat wins were shared around and for the second week in a row, none of the visitors reached double figures.
Fernando Garcia had his best performance in the 1-5, losing only to Campton(the only points he scored!), while Rene Bach only lost to Wells.
The Comets only sprung to life when the meeting was lost and none of their team really had a good meeting with even the reliable Ricky Wells failing to win a heat.
With some tough meetings still to come this month in Ipswich and more so Somerset, Glasgow will be glad to tick off another home win and look to take some points next weekend down south, to try and consolidate their second place in the league.
