Glasgow Tigers 46 v 44 Workington Comets

Tigers maintained their unbeaten home record but were pushed all the way by a compact Workington side in a thrilling match.
Craig Cook in only his second match at Ashfield in as many years, easily won heat 1 but behind him Aaron Summers had to pass Mason Campton for third. He tried to help partner Dan Bewley but they never got in the right positions and when Bewley went too wide on the second bend on lap 3, it allowed Campton past, Bewley’s fall ending the race.
The visitors extended their lead with another 4-2 in the reserves race before Tigers responded with a brace of 4-2s themselves, Jack Smith’s tough first bend on Rob Shuttleworth getting an important point in heat 4.
Another Cook win followed in heat 5, with Nike Lunna unable to get past Campton for a 2-4.
Heat 6 was shared before Tigers levelled through Richard Lawson and Tom Perry.
Heat 8 looked like it would result in the first 5-1 as both Comets gated but Bewley reeled in Campton, passing him on the third lap but just lost out to Williamson on the line.
It was back level again after heat 9 and with Bewley just failing to catch Roynon in heat 10, it left the score at 30-30.
The unbeaten Worrall and Cook met in heat 11 and the home man easily took the honours although Perry couldn’t find a way past Campton.
Tigers took the lead for the first time in heat 12 with yet another 4-2, Perry getting the better of Williamson on the opening bend.
Then came a Heat 13 classic!
Cook and Thomas Jorgensen both gated but Summers clever inside run enabled him to pass both Comets down the back straight in a hard but fair move.Cook came back up the inside on the 4th bend but Summers stayed ahead into lap 2 but he almost let Cook back ahead of him but managed to wind it on around the outside to lead again. Try as he might Cook couldn’t get past him again. At the back Jorgensen and Worrall passed one another before the Comet prevailed.
Summers’ bike then won heat 14 with Lunna onboard, setting up a last heat decider with Tigers two up.
The same line up as heat 13 appeared and like that heat, Workington gated. However whilst Cook won the heat, Jorgensen was swallowed up by both Tigers, who team rode home for the 3-3 and a narrow win!
Tigers at the end were relieved to get the win as Workington pushed them all the way. The home heat leaders steered them through with Tigers tail struggling slightly, although everyone of them scored important points.
The visitors probably didn’t expect such good scores from Roynon and Williamson nor poor ones from Proctor and Jorgensen, although they were well worth their consolation point.
Tigers will need to ride better next week, although Edinburgh matches don’t normally need much motivation to do so!!
