With a keen eye on developing young Scottish talent, the Tigers have signed local lad RYAN MACDONALD as their number 8.
19 year old Ryan has supported the Tigers since being brought to Ashfield aged just six. Ryan started riding in motocross when he was nine and later – inspired
by the exploits of fellow Scot James Grieves – started riding speedway.
Ryan rode for Scunthorpe Saints in last season’s National League, allowing him some regular competitive track time. He and dad, Gordon, racked up 16,000 miles around the third tier circuits of the UK.
This season Ryan will ride for Stoke Potters in the National League, which will further his development, as well as being on Glasgow’s books as number 8.
Delighted
Ryan is delighted to join his home town club, saying: “Riding for Scunthorpe was a great experience for me. It was a tough year with lots of ups and downs but I can’t thank Richard (Hollingsworth) and Rob (Godfrey) enough for giving me the chance.
“I’m hoping to have a more consistent season with Stoke, to up my average and generally enjoy myself.”
“I’m over the moon about being part of Glasgow speedway this year. There’s a real good feel about the club and the stadium looks outstanding. It’s good being a local lad and hopefully one day I can make my way into the 1-7.
“I’ve also been hearing plans for a speedway academy and I’m sure that I can benefit from that. I also know a few motocross riders who’re itching to have a go.”
Talent
Glasgow co-promoter Colin Hamilton claims that Ryan’s signing, which was concluded last month, is significant:
“We have to keep an eye on the future, particularly given our geographic position so bringing through talented young local riders must be worth pursuing.
“Ryan hasn’t been riding speedway all that long and he’s got lots of development yet to come. Having him as part of a successful team can only be of benefit to him and us.”
Hamilton added: “We’d like to express our thanks to Scunthorpe for being so helpful in selling Ryan to us.”
