Glasgow Tigers 51 – 42 Edinburgh Monarchs

Tigers gave themselves a fighting chance of making the semi finals with an easier than expected win over their main rivals for qualification.

Edinburgh had no answer to a whirlwind start by the home side that saw Glasgow 14-4 up after three heats.

Sam Masters won heat 4 but a superb race involving Craig Cook and Nick Morris in heat 5 where they passed and re-passed throughout the opening lap and a half before Morris prevailed saw Tigers re-open the 10 point deficit.

Sam Masters duly won double points in heat 6 and Kozza Smith’s fall gifted Edinburgh a 7-2 to half the deficit.

Aaron Summers then brilliantly passed Kevin Wolbert off the last bend in heat 7 before Smith and James Sarjeant opened the gap to 9 with an easy 5-1 in heat 8.

Monarchs stemmed the tide with three shared heats, although Kevin Wolbert was fortunate to win heat 10 after Richard Lawson hit the fence when well ahead.

Tigers made sure of the win with another superb race in heat 12, Nick Morris twice passing Kevin Wolbert before shepherding round Sarjeant for the 5-1.

Summers then ended Masters’ maximum hopes by winning heat 13 and Tigers stopped Edinburgh’s bid for a point with a 3-3 in heat 14 although Dimitri Berge was fortunate not to fall off after hitting the fence, luckily Erik Riss had bike problems at the time.

Monarchs took a consolation 5-1 in heat 15, giving a scoreline which flattered them.

This was Glasgow’s best home performance of the season with everyone paid for a win and if it hadn’t been for some silly points thrown away, plus a double pointer, the margin of victory would’ve been bigger.

Edinburgh relied on their top 3 although Cook has ridden better, the rest were poor with the exception of Robert Branford, while Justin Sedgmen looked like he wanted to be anywhere other than Ashfield.

Monarchs are still favourites to win the section but Tigers are making sure that they know they are there!
