RICKY Wells says Glasgow are league leaders “for a reason” – and don’t want to settle for second place in the race for the play-offs.
The Tigers take on Scunthorpe in the SGB Championship on Friday night, with the Scorpions just five points behind in third place.
The top two in the table will go straight into the play-off semi-finals while the next four sides battle it out to take them on.
Wells says Glasgow will not give up their position without a fight – as he aims to fulfil his title ambitions at the club.
He said: “I think Scunthorpe will be a tricky one. They’re a solid team that some of the riders on their day are really quick.
“We never expect any team to be easy even at home. I think there is enough experience in the team to realise what can happen in speedway, and a few bad heats can change a meeting drastically.
“We will be up for it though, were at the top of the table for a reason. Once you are up at the top, you want to stay there and even second place isn’t good enough.
‘It should be a great end to the year’
“We are a solid team and I think if we keep going the way we are we should be in for a great end to the year.”
Wells – who is in his first season with the Tigers – says it’s been a “great” experience so far.
He continued: “The riders get along really well, and the desire and passion is all throughout the club.
“In my eyes, Glasgow as a team do everything the way it should be. It’s so professional, and for me I just want to give back as much as possible to the promotion.
“They give us the best of everything, and it’s the least we can do. I think all other six riders feel the same as well.”
‘I have a new engine coming this week’
The American admits it has been a “frustrating” season on a personal level, but he sees his return to form against Berwick last weekend as a “step in the right direction”.
He added: ” I have been swapping between engines this year looking for the right combination.
“I went back to one of my older engines that I used everywhere in 2018/19 and pretty much went back to basics.
“I have a new engine coming this week just to try and get a bit more speed.
“Glasgow is a tricky track for setup, although it has been rather slick this year you still need some power to pull you off the corners.”
